In 2016, Lucasfilm released this interstitial Star Wars story, set between the end of "Revenge of the Sith" and the start of "A New Hope." It covers the creation of the Death Star, and finally answers some questions that fans and critics alike had been asking for nearly 40 years. Since we're screening this as a lead-in to our Silent Star Wars - Part II show on Sunday, we decided to show the "Rogue One Chromium" version, which has been reprocessed in black & white.
Galen Erso is a research scientist in hiding with his family when an Imperial weapons developer arrives to press him into completing the Death Star. His young daughter Jyn escapes and is rescued by rebel extremist Saw Gerrera. Fifteen years later, a cargo pilot defects from the Empire, bringing a message from Galen to Gerrera on the desert moon Jedha. Jyn is rescued from an Imperial labor camp and brought to the Rebel leader Mon Mothma, who convinces her to find and rescue her father so the Alliance can learn more about the Death Star.
